Trinity Bride of West Virginia (American Mail-Order Bride #35)
By Carre White
5/5 stars

After the textile mill fire, Trinity had no recourse but to become a mail-order bride, with her inability to find a job and nowhere else to go. When she gets off the train, she’s immediately taken to the courthouse to be married. To her shock, her husband is much older than she ever imagined, to her 22 years, he’s 58. But with no options, she goes ahead with the marriage.

Nathaniel arrives from NYC too late to stop his father’s wedding. He thinks that his father must be losing his mind to marry a woman so young. And he believes that such a young woman marrying a man who is old enough to be her father, probably older, is because she is a gold-digger. When he sees Trinity, he’s shocked at just how beautiful she is and can’t believe that she is his new stepmother.

Trinity and Nathaniel are attracted to one another, but neither will ever step over that line. They both are respectful of the boundaries. But Nathaniel showers Trinity with gifts, and they write letters to each other, that do express their feelings.

**Mild Spoilers**
I don’t normally do spoilers, but there have been many low ratings on this book because such a young woman married such an aging man. Yes, his body was aging and not muscled and yes, he snored and had age-related issues. But he treated her with loving kindness, respectfulness and he spoiled her more than she ever imagined. Yes, she had marital relations with him, as he was her husband, which is why many gave low ratings. But the author showed the truth of many situational marriages during that time. I applaud the author for going that route and that is what truly had me liking this book so much and for pushing it up to the 5 star rating.
Trinity Kroger was orphaned at age three. Friends of her parents took her in and she was happy there until the husband died and the wife couldn't afford to keep her. From there she went to an orphanage until she was old enough to get a job. She worked at the clothing factory until it burned down. So, along with many of the other workers, she decided to become a mail order bride. She wrote to John Witherspoon, whose ad she saw in the Grooms' Gazette. After exchanging a few letters, she learned that he was an older widower who had served two terms in the Virginia legislature. He had retired from politics, owned a partnership in several coal mines, and was comfortably well-off. Agreeing to become his bride, she traveled to Clarksburg, West Virginia, where he made his home. She was surprised to be met at the railroad station by an employee rather than her groom. She was taken directly to the courthouse where the wedding would take place. His housekeeper met her at the door, gave her a bouquet, and led her to the courtroom where she met Mr Whitherspoon. To her shock, he was fifty eight to her twenty two. He had white hair and walked with a cane. He was not much taller than Trinity and was somewhat portly. The wedding took place immediately. After the ceremony, Nathaniel Whitherspoon rushed in to try to stop the wedding. He was John's grown son, older than Trinity and quite handsome. But it was too late, the ceremony had taken place. Are you beginning to see the yuck factor here?

Mr John Witherspoon claimed his marital rights the first night and every night. Nate fell in love with his father's wife and even wanted an affair. Trinity seemed to dither ineffectively and later proved to have no backbone. By the end of the book, I couldn't stand any of them. I gave it two stars because I had a little hope for some sort of salvageable ending but that didn't happen.

I am sorry but I really cannot recommend this book. I feel bad because I know authors work hard on their books. But honestly, this is my opinion. Some people liked the book. You can use your own judgement.
Great
John Witherspoon is not the man she expected to wed. He was older than she expected with white hair. She was met at the station by a man who worked for John and was taken to the courthouse to be married immediately. John was old but he made her his wife the same night. She could not sleep with him in the same room because he snored so loud. She met his son Nathaniel and be was a few years older than Trinity and when they touched handsome knew she was in trouble. They had a connection. This is a story you do not want to miss reading.
Love this whole series fun to read, I just kept going from one book to the another!
Wow! This is definitely not a typical mail order bride story! This is more like a soap opera on television. Great story with many surprises. I definitely recommend reading this story.
