A fabulously engrossing tome of love and adventure that should be required reading at the U.S. Foreign Service Institute and by everyone who is dreaming of a career in either the public or private sectors. Its reading was all the more delightful because we had the privilege of knowing Jan and Gene on their "final assignment" living in retirement in Avenel in the suburbs of Washington, D.C. For old friends or new, Jan's account of her exciting life with Gene, an always adventurous petroleum engineer, is a charming account of the joys and sorrows of a life built on love, deep faith, delight in knowing others, and endless fascination with our global community. Whatever one's path in life, this book reaffirms the basic goodness of our fellowman and the richness that accrues to those who pursue their lives with gusto. A must read.

What a great trip it is to accompany Jan as she and Gene traveled life's road meeting many friends of different cultures, facing many challenges, and experiencing much success with family, career and faith through their journey. I don't know that the book can be specifically categorized -- to me it is a book of romance, adventure, faith, family, friendship, devotion and success. I first met Jan and Gene in 1954. My late wife and I were with them on their first "coke" date at Oklahoma University. Gene was head over heels in love from the start -- much to the detriment of his attention to integral calculus. During Gene's career, Jan's ability to describe the different cultures and living conditions they faced is remarkable. Many of the situations they were in were very rewarding but many were also filled with danger not only from lack of services but also from the political atmosphere of the countries they were stationed in. My children are now sharing and enjoying the book as much as I did. I think you will enjoy it too.
The author, Janice Rice Grogan, begins the Preface to the book, All My Life with You A Memoir, with the sentence This is a Love Story. She takes the reader on the adventures that she and her husband, Gene, who began their lives in Oklahoma then covered 19 moves on five continents where they raised their three children and relied on their love for one another and their faith, learned to appreciate the world’s diverse cultures and customs.
Using information from personal notes, diaries, and letters, the author recounts the odyssey that she, her husband and their children navigated during moves in the Northern and Southern United States, Central and South America, Africa, and the United Kingdom. How did they cope as a family when they were frequently asked to move from one country to another as Gene accepted assignments in the oil industry? How did they meet challenges thrust upon them in their living conditions, languages, and cultural norms? Relying on a deep faith, strong family ties and their committed respect of the countries and cultures to which they were assigned, they were rewarded with countless international friends, incredible experiences and a deepening of their love.
The book recounts charming and humorous episodes, as well as more serious and some frightening scenes. The chapters are couched in historical settings giving the reader a sense of the family’s responses to their new countries, community and world events. A delightful, reader-friendly book that gives us a peek into what life must be like to yes, live in Africa and go on Safari, or navigate London, but also to pick up with sometimes little notice to move to new life. Challenging rewarding!
First, understand that this is no ordinary life story. Jan and Gene Grogan began married life as do most hopeful and loving couples, but this story assumes a more exotic flair. As the young wife of a promising oil company engineer, Jan could not have anticipated what awaited her as Gene's career grew. Her story of family life is set in a myriad of locations from small U.S. oil towns to exotic and far flung locations in Latin America, Europe, Africa to name a few. Her initial international experiences in wild and barren Patagonia captivate us before it moves forward through 19 difference countries.
Jan neatly weaves the challenges of family life and child rearing abroad with descriptions of local color and familiar historic events. She brings to life varied international incidents, dangerous situations, the sadness of loss, and the effects of all these events on their family life. As the story unfolds, we begin to learn of Jan's personal spiritual growth during this lifetime of constant change.
All My Life With You is a story of love; it is an adventure. It is certainly memoir at its best.
Jan has written the book so well, you learn about the people and politics of each country plus their personal experiences. I've known Jan for over 35 years but had no idea of the great adventures or hardships. I know of her sacrifice going into the Colombian prison first hand so I shouldn't have been surprised!
Ordered for someone else but she liked it.
